more efficient hydrogen fuel system

More efficient hydrogen fuel system

More efficient Hydrogen system .  After many  months of research and testing of how to make an efficient Power supply to run a Hydrogen fuel system, it has come to our realization that  the better way to control the power / current control of a Hydrogen generator is to not use a current controlled electronic device to govern the operation of the unit but instead use a simple circuit breaker and electrolyte concentration monitor to stop thermal runaway.

As is commonly known , as the system operates it converts water into hydrogen and oxygen gas and slowly the concentration of the electrolyte increases.

Increasing electrolyte concentration lowers the internal resistance of  the system  which increases current flow, increases gas production rate and heats the electrolyte, which further lowers the electrolyte resistance and allows more current to flow.

This is the basis of the thermal runaway.

The electronic current controlled device is designed to stop thermal runaway and funnel the extra  energy released through the aluminum  heat  sinks on the electronic unit.

However this heating process is a weak link in the process and effectively wasting 15 to 20% of the electrical energy input as heat , rather than gas production.

It also uses up to 2 volts which is essential to the Oxidation/ reduction reaction in the electrolysis units …. 2 volts give away that can stop a system working completely

We have designed several MOSFET units that operate as effective current control devices , but these too are electronic devices which can be and are prone to failure , just as any electronic device operating in Hot, dusty rough conditions as experienced by cars and trucks on our roads.

So back to the solution.    We decided to  try only a 35 amp circuit breaker unit attached to a system that was powered with a electrolyte strength that was initially operating / at start up at 22 amp.

As the electrolyte was used up  and solution concentration and temperature increases , the electrolyte internal resistance falls leading to more current flowing.  With our three litre recycling container storing the electrolyte it worked out the the 35 amp circuit breaker switched the current  off when 2.5 litres of electrolyte had been used .

We refilled the tank with distilled water and switched on the unit and if returned to operate again at 22 amp

One liter of water lasts for  12 hours and the tanks was refilled after 30 hours of operation ,,, the same as had been happening before when we were  using  a current controlled device

More efficient Hydrogen system. What did we gain from this?     We didn’t waste 20 % of the energy input , produced more hydrogen gas , improved the engine operation, stopped  the cells from heating, made the system more reliable and avoided losing that crucial 2 volts from a 12 volt battery  that is crucial  to the oxidation/ reduction reaction used in electrolysis .

We will now take a series of photographs and detail the alteration to a hydrogen system that can make the system work better… This is our aim at hydrogen fuel systems pty ltd to make the most efficient hydrogen generating device to work in all climatic and environmental conditions.  MORE to follow…….
