Comparing sodium hydroxide electrolyte to Potassium Hydroxide

Potassium hydroxide (KOH) is generally considered a better electrolyte than sodium hydroxide (NaOH) for hydrogen generation in electrolysis, though the difference may not be huge in all contexts. Here’s why:

1.  Ion Conductivity:     Potassium hydroxide (KOH) has better ionic conductivity than sodium hydroxide (NaOH). T

his is due to potassium ions (K⁺) being larger and more mobile than sodium ions (Na⁺), which makes KOH more efficient at carrying charge during electrolysis.

Higher conductivity reduces the resistance of the electrolyte and improves the overall efficiency of the electrolysis process.

 

2.  Electrode Performance: In electrolysis, the electrode reactions are crucial. Potassium hydroxide is less likely to form insoluble salts or precipitates, which could interfere with the electrolysis process.

Sodium hydroxide can sometimes form sodium carbonate (Na₂CO₃) when exposed to carbon dioxide, which could deposit on the electrodes, negatively impacting performance. This issue is less significant with potassium hydroxide.

 

3.  Overpotentials: Overpotential refers to the extra energy required to drive a reaction at an electrode.

For the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline solutions, potassium hydroxide tends to result in slightly lower overpotentials compared to sodium hydroxide, leading to more efficient hydrogen production.

 

4.  Corrosion Resistance: Potassium hydroxide is generally considered to have less corrosive effect on some materials used in electrolysis systems compared to sodium hydroxide.

This can help extend the lifespan of electrodes and other system components.

That being said, sodium hydroxide is still commonly used in many industrial electrolysis applications due to its lower cost and good performance. In terms of pure performance for hydrogen generation, however, potassium hydroxide has the edge.

 

A word of Warning

1.  Some people have recently called me and asked if it is possible to extract pure sodium or Pure Potassium from sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide.

The answer is a simple No no  no no

And if you do manage to obtain these very reactive metals , keep them dry and coated with oil so as to not allow a reaction with moisture. — it is explosive .  – remember your High school Chemistry Teacher  –   , I am sure he was   A VERY good Man / Woman.

2.  Potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide solutions or solids should only be handled using gloves and protective glasses. 

Recently a teacher colleague  of mine had caustic solution splashed into his face / eyes when he was not wearing protective glasses.  He immediately washed his face and eyes but the damage to his cornea had already occurred.   The Lipids in his cornea had been dissolved and permanent eye damage is the result…. The cornea does not repair itself. Always wear protective glasses and gloves when handling caustic solution
